Computer
The main functions of a dive computer are to monitor depth and bottom time, track nitrogen load, and calculate decompression. They are currently available in a myriad of options, with the most important features to consider when choosing one being:
User-replaceable battery or user-chargeable capability
NATO or elastic straps for easy use on the wrist (even with a dry suit) allowing for efficiency and comfort.
Ideally with a bright color screen, good contrast, and easy readability.
Bulhmann or VPM-based algorithms, with multiple gas management.
Easy navigation between menus and options. Preferably connected to the app or PC via Wi-Fi.
Compass
A diving compass is a navigation instrument based on a (ferromagnetic) needle attached to a disc which is marked with the cardinal points. This entire assembly is housed in a transparent, oil-filled capsule. The compass holder is fitted with a rotating crown, also marked with the cardinal points. For easy use and proper functioning of the compass, these are the main characteristics to consider:
Tall capsule that prevents the compass from easily jamming due to tilting.
Needle disc and rotating crown with clear marking of the cardinal points without excessive information (maximum of 10° increments).
High-quality phosphorescent needle discs allow for good readability, especially during night dives.
Easy-to-use supports, among which the elastomer supports with elastic straps stand out.
Manometer
When choosing a submersible pressure gauge (SPG), these are the main characteristics to consider:
The pressure gauge scale chosen (above at least 100 bar) depends on the maximum operating pressure.
Dial size ranging from 52 mm to 63 mm. Preferably a low-profile 52 mm dial for use on stages.
Display with clear markings of 10 bar increments across the entire scale and numerical information in 50 bar increments across the entire scale.
High-quality phosphorescent display allowing for good readability, especially during night dives.
Sturdy metal case (preferably nickel-plated) and tempered glass.
