Although a flashlight may not be necessary for dives with good light and visibility, it is nevertheless an important tool for seeing and communicating in poor or low visibility conditions. The most important features to consider when choosing one are the following:
It has a Goodman grip that allows you to hold and point the light, freeing your hands for other tasks.
Featuring a long-range LED light beam that can be focused at an angle of 6 to 10º, allowing for clear and secure communication.
Optionally, if video or photography lighting is desired, beams with adjustable aperture greater than 60º are available.
Use rechargeable batteries, preferably with adequate autonomy for the diving exposures, respecting the respective reserve.
Preferably with piezoelectric or magnetic switches, reducing the likelihood of malfunction.
It has a robust construction with resistance to impacts and pressure (> 150m).
Backup
A backup flashlight is an auxiliary safety device, or even mandatory in certain types of dives, providing alternative light in case the main flashlight fails. To ensure its easy and safe use, these are the main characteristics that must be met:
Small, cylindrical, and robust construction made of aluminum or Delrin.
LED head, preferably waterproof, but recoverable even if flooded.
Mechanical threaded connection by rotating the head (without a switch) ensuring a lower probability of failure due to humidity or flooding.
Sealing of moving parts using double o-rings to create greater airtightness.
Operates on standard C-type or CR18650 batteries.
